Common mistakes in Jewelry Product Photography
Jewelry product photography has its own set of rules and challenges. Products are delicate, crafty and reflective and can be difficult to shoot. However, you can get rid of these challenges easily with slight planning.
Here are few common mistakes/errors, you should avoid when photographing jewelry.
Product should be well prepared before you plan for shooting. Your jewelry should be clean and well polished. Details invisible to your naked eye will be revealed when photographed. So clean your jewelry every time you touch it before shooting.
Consistency is the key in product photography especially when it is done for e commerce. Variations in product images in a series of images distract your customer and you may lose your credibility among customers. Make sure you can resume shooting on another day without any obvious changes.
Complex or cluttered backgrounds are not recommended for product photography as they can shift the focus from the product. A plain white or light colored background keeps the focus where it should be i.e. on your product. White backdrops are cheap and can be created easily. You can use seamless white paper and even photograph white products on white backgrounds.
This is again a common mistake as props mean distraction. You may think your jewelry will look great when shoot with a model or a mannequin. But the reality is, most props draw focus away from your product. Props come in the view of the product and hinder the full view of the product. Props, models, mannequins and interesting locations in shots are suggested for editorial shoots for brand promotion. Editorials are meant for magazines and banners in emails not for product category pages. Most props cause inconsistency and distraction.
Gemstones and metal pose a technical challenge for jewelry product photographers. It’s quite tricky to shoot highly reflective objects without any reflection. Follow a simple procedure here. Place your product/jewelry on a hard surface, like a table, and position one big studio light on each side. Diffuse both the lights with umbrellas. Drop and sweep seamless white paper behind and underneath the product to the bottom of your camera. This will block reflections from the foreground. Now position your lights above your product to either side.
Handholding your camera results in camera shake and results in blurred image. So using a tripod is must. When your camera is held steady by a tripod, you can use ideal aperture and ISO settings. Mark your tripod spot and continue with your same setup even when shooting on different days.
Soft focus is a big No-No in jewelry photography. It may look artsy in other genres but not advised for jewelry photography as it focuses on only one part of the product. Your customer wants to see each and every detail. So go for high aperture, full focus photography which creates a sharp image that your customers can believe.
Inaccurate White Balance
Make sure your white balance is set precisely so that you capture your jewelry with the colors you intended. With inaccurate white balance your image will not look same as it is actually.
Too Few Images
It’s highly disappointing for a customer to find very few images in the category page when he/she intends to see the product from different angles. Build credibility by showcasing every little aspect of your jewelry. We have written earlier also in one of our blogs that more images lead to more sales, so take images from maximum possible angles.

Welcome, once again to our basics of product photography blog. As in our previous blogs, we have covered aperture and shutter speed respectively. Now, it’s time to discuss about the third and also one of the important terminology of photography. Which is ISO, it is little different from aperture and shutter speed. Instead of controlling, how much light gets to the sensor, it controls how much light the sensor needs to make the image. The higher the ISO, the more sensitive to sensor is to light. Suppose for a moment that light enters your camera in neat little cubes, and let’s consider that there are 48 cubes that it takes to get a correct exposure at ISO 200. If you set the camera to ISO 400 instead, the sensor only needs half as much light.That is 24 cubes. Set it to 800 and again, it’s twice as sensitive and you only need twelve cubes. 1600 needs half as much light again, and 3200 needs half as much light as that, and so forth. So, when you set the camera to high ISO, you can take pictures when there is a lot less light. Pretty simple.
Now, for beginners those who are looking to perform product photography in Gurgaon, product photography in Noida or Product photography in Delhi must be going through one question in their mind that why not we just shoot at high ISO all the time? Because the higher you set the ISO, the more digital noise or film grain will be visible. Now, after having discussed about all the three basic terminologies of e commerce photography or general photography one can say. The main agenda here is to understand that how these three, aperture, shutter speed and ISO works together? It could be understood via an example, suppose we set the camera settings at f/2.8, ISO 400, and for simplicity’s sake the shutter speed is 1 second. And if we take a picture at these settings of camera, the exposure is just right. Now, what if a product photographer want more depth of field?We set the aperture in such a way so, that it is one notch smaller. But what happens when we take a picture? Now, only half as much light will get to the sensor and the picture which will come out to be under exposed. This can be resolved by making the shutter stay open for twice as long, two seconds in this case. And if we cut the amount of light in half with the aperture again by setting it down to f/5.6, we can make up for it by doubling the shutter speed again, to 4 seconds. There is one other option. Let’s go back to the settings we started from, now the alternate would be to change the ISO instead of shutter speed and we can leave it to 1 second and can change the ISO to 800. Now, the sensor will need only half as much light, which is perfect, because only half as much light is getting through the lens, and if set down the aperture to another notch to f/5.6, we can make up for it by changing the ISO to 1600. At this point, the picture be very much clear about how these three factors relate to each other. If you change any of the settings in one direction, you have to make up for it by moving either one of the other two in the opposite direction. So, if we set the ISO up one notch to 1600, we can up for it by setting shutter speed down one notch to 250th of a second. If we move the ISO down two notches to 400, we can make up for it by opening up the aperture two notches to f/4 and you can split the change between two of the other settings. Product photography for beginners can be difficult to perform if they don’t have the basic knowledge of photography. This blog is for those who are looking for services like product photography in Delhi or product photography in Gurgaon. Lots of people are buying SLRs these days, and we all want to make the most of our expensive new cameras. Unfortunately, as a beginner it can be a very difficult task. When you cut through all the terminology, though, photography is just as simple as it was fifty years ago, may be even simpler. Once you understand the basic elements of exposure and how they are dependent on each other, the rest of the details just fall into place. And there are only three things you need to learn and understand exposure. They are
2.) Shutter speed
First of all it comes to aperture. Aperture is the small opening in the lens that can be made smaller or larger to allow in more or less light. The opening is formed by several blades that slide over each other, so the opening is not perfectly circular but it is pretty close. If you’ll notice the side view of your camera you will figure out that aperture looks like a small door that opens and closes inside the lens. The aperture settings for the lens are called “f-stops”. The scale of f-stops goes in the format of something like f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16, f/22 and so on. The relation between the values of f-stops and opening of lens of the camera are inversely proportional to each other. This means that the lower will be the values of f-stops the more will be the opening of the lens of the camera to allow light to fall on the sensor of the camera. This could be understood with an example like if you start with a value of f/2.8 it (lens opening) lets in a lot of light, if you switch to f/4 it lets in half as much light and if you switch to f/5.6 it lets in half as much light as f/4 which is a quarter of what we had at f/2.8. This was just the exposure part but aperture also controls something else that affects how the photos look and that is the “depth of field”.
Depth of field is basically, how blurry your background and foreground are compared to what you are focusing on. If you use a large opening in your lens, the background will be very blurred. This is called as shallow depth of filed. If you use a small opening, which in turn is a larger f-stop value, the background will be less blurry. This exercise could be performed by those product photographers in Delhi, product photographers in Gurgaon or product photographers in Noida who are beginning there photography career in e-commerce photography or any type of creative photography. In this section we have only covered the aperture part, in the coming blogs we will discuss the remaining assets of photography such as shutter speed, ISO and other basics which are a must for every freelancer/full time product photographer, in fact, not just a product photographer but each and every photographer.
In our previous blog we discussed about some basic product photography tips for beginners and covered only one part of it that is aperture and what is its role in e commerce photography or any kind of photography? Now, the second and most important technical terminology of photography is “Shutter speed unlike the previous one that is “aperture”, Shutter speed is even easier to understand. I think the most beginning product photographers in Delhi know that the shutter controls how long the sensor is exposed to light. It is as easy it gets, which means that the less time the shutter is open, the less light gets through. As, in case of aperture the values were in the form of f-stops, here in case of shutter speed are in terms of seconds and parts of seconds and the values are in the series of 1/250, 1/125, 1/60, 1/30, 1/15, 1/8, ¼, ½, 1, 2, 4, 8 and so on. Suppose if you set it for 1 second, the light reaches the sensor for a full second, the next setting up is a half-second, and half as much light gets the sensor. The next setting is quarter –second, and again, half as much light gets to the sensors as the previous setting, and so on. With each setting change, it gets cut in half and then in half and in half and so forth. And, of course if you change the setting in the opposite direction, you will get twice as much light. If you have been paying attention, you are probably starting to see a pattern here. And of course the shutter speed also makes a difference in how your photos look. Using a fast shutter speed will freeze the motion/action in your picture, but if you use a slow shutter speed, you will get blurry motion.
This was all about the technicality of shutter speed. Then you should go for high shutter speeds to catch all the motion. And on the other hand if the product/subject is still then you should go for low shutter speed. There has to be a balance between the shutter speed and aperture in order to take beautiful pictures of your products. Somehow, the relation between aperture and shutter speed are inversely proportional to each other. If you are choosing high aperture values, which would result in a low opening of your camera lens and less light would get in the sensor. Therefore in order to balance that you will have to choose slow shutter speed. So, that you can allow more light to get in. If the balance between the two, that is the aperture and the shutter speed is not maintained, then your picture will either get under exposed or over exposed.
