Make your campaign shoot standout with these tips and tricks

Photography is a career that requires a lot of creativity, ideas, technical skills and more importantly the patience to have that perfect shot. Indeed, it can be both exciting and tedious.  The budding photographers often look up to on the Internet for the starting points, or guidance to make their first campaign shoot a success. So, here are the few guidelines that any aspiring photographer, can keep as a reckoner for a successful start. And be ready to garner lot of compliments for your photography skills.

​1.    As it is said, “Proper preparation prevents poor performance!” Imbibe these words before you go for any type of shoot assignment. Photography is not just about picking up the best camera and forgetting the rest.  So, prepare in terms of what your subject is, how you will manage the color contrast, go through the previous catalogs, etc. Spend time in visualizing, the set up, it will build a good scenario to carry out the entire process smoothly. Think outside the box. 

​2.    Another top priority in your checklist must be the location. A perfect location enhances your subject and provides a depth to the picture. Checking the location will provide a background in beforehand about the shoot. More importantly, it will give an idea, what type of camera gears you need to carry, the light temperature required to name a few. Light plays an important role in the pictures. So, do find out what time of the day you are shooting at that particular location.

​3.    Communicate with your clients, on their basic needs and deeds. What you are shooting on, greatly depends on what your client wants. It will be a double work if you carry out a shoot without considering their requirements. Mainly, ask for the details, like how many shot angles they want, what all platforms they will be showcasing the pictures on. What type of picturesque they are looking? Do they want images more in Landscape or portrait form?  Make sure to finalize the deadlines in prior, so that your entire work process goes seamlessly.

​4.    The entire shoot process is not a standalone work. You require a good team from makeup artists to camera assistants, and much more. Pick a team you are comfortable with, who understands your working style. It requires patience and even a slightest bad finishing that affect the composition of the frame. Therefore, try to pick up people who you know. In some situations, you don’t have much role in this as client already has its team ready. Then just be sure about the passion towards your work. And everything will gel up. 

5.    When finally the D-day arrives, try to make the most of the free time you get. Get an idea, of shoot-style or looks of the models for a particular place, do a quick test of the location, just glimpse around and see the finest spot of your dream picture. This will make you ready for your final output and eventually the switches will be less. While, on the shoot, take opinions from the client, ask whether it works for them or if they have some suggestion in poses and angles of the models. This will also develop a better understanding between you and your client. 

​6.    Evaluate your pictures after the shoot. As a person who is just into the world of campaign photography, always seek opinions. They can be a mix of everything. But do take them. It will help to enhance your skills, also you will get to know different perspectives and will make you creative in your craft. Have a sense of compliments and critiques. Not all are right, and then apply your knowledge.

​7.    In the world of social networking sites, everyone wants to showcase what work they are doing.  Many clients have a policy of not putting the shots, and behind the scenes photos until and unless the pictures are officially out. In that term, to maintain the details, do communicate on the rules once before posting them online. Otherwise, you can proudly post once the pictures are officially out. Also, you can add both behind the scenes and final one together to showcase your work in more creative ways

  ​8.    BACK UP, BACK UP! Highlight it in caps in your list! It is the most essential in the post production phase. Keep the back up of all your pictures you take on-board the shoot. It might be tedious as there are thousands of them. But then for the long run, it's a must. Technology is definitely a reliable thing, but having a back up is certainly a better option than to redo the shoot again.  Losing pictures will surely impact your credibility in the industry. Therefore, be on a safer side.
